This post was written in Danish in January 2018 and later translated into English. Only the language changed.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I have gone hunting for even lighter gear for the trip. It has become necessary now that I have ended up going more “all in” on my camera gear. So now I have invested in an Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt. *Sleeping bag* is so ‘last year’.

Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt

A quilt like this is a kind of sleeping bag, but with a couple of fairly important differences:

It is open at the back! Which means I will be lying directly on whatever mat I choose to lie on. That alone saves me a lot of pointless weight in fill that does nothing. Down only insulates if it is fluffy and lofted, and if you lie on it, it is pressed completely flat (unless you are insanely thin and therefore light as a feather 😉 )

It can also be opened right up, so it works as an ordinary duvet on warm nights.
That is handy too for anyone who feels shut in by a traditional sleeping bag – and/or if you are the restless type at night.

There is no hood on a quilt either. It ends at the neck (depending on what length you bought, of course). So I need to learn to sleep wearing a beanie.

Last but not least, the model I designed weighs about 200 grams less than the first one I bought (which is for sale, by the way – and it is fracking awesome!)

Whaaaat? 200 gram?!

Saving 200 grams maybe does not sound like much, but I have also managed to find a “better” rain jacket that weighs 160 grams less than the first one.

So hey presto: I have cut a lot of grams off my baggage – and spent a small fortune doing it 😉 .
If I had not decided to bring a drone along, for instance, I probably would not have needed to get this fanatical about grams 😉

My new quilt is also rated for several degrees below freezing, by the way, because it is stuffed with high quality down. If I had cut back on the down quality I could actually have saved even more grams. But I have done a bit of research and worked out that I will probably be glad of the extra warmth (I do get cold rather easily)

Did I mention that I designed my Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt myself? 😉

You can do that on their website – totally awesome!
